Looking for ‘the magic wand’?

ASK me what make-up item could I not live without, I would give you a straight-up answer, there and there, without second thoughts, I would say mascara. I just love mascara! It makes a huge difference on anyone’s face. It gives oomph to every look! Pulled off an all-nighter? With just one sweep, you would look fully awake. It really comes in handy anytime. This is very true to me. Especially nowadays, where I’m pulling all-nighters almost every night because it’s nearing the end of my thesis semester, mascara has become my best friend.

Finding the perfect mascara is one of the hardest parts of going clean with our beauty routines. We find ourselves in constant pursuit of the mascara that would best suit us, in accordance to the lashes we have and the preferences we live with. While some people have short lashes, some people have long. While some people have straight lashes, some people are sporting natural curly ones. And don’t get me started on the numerous combinations of these characteristics. Personally, I have long and curly lashes. My mom has long, straight lashes and my dad has short, curly ones. I’m so glad I got the good combination (hihi). Since I know I have this sort of lashes, having the right kind of mascara is important to me (You gotta work your assets, girl!).

Finding the mascara that would be true to us would be such an achievement. For myself, I only look for two things for my mascara: easy to put on and easy to wash off. I used to think that wasn’t much to ask, but the more I search, the more I realize looking for the perfect mascara could be difficult. So, once you get a hold of THE mascara, or what I would fondly call ‘the magic wand,’ you better take good care of it, just as you would do with that one true love (LOL what?). I’ve tried several mascaras and I cannot wait to tell you all about them!

1. Fanny Serrano, Lash Extravagance Extreme Length

I felt giddy just by the name of this product. I wonder how pretty it would look on my lashes given that I already have long lashes. Having long lashes is one thing but ‘extravagance extreme length’? Now, that’s really something! Plus, the packaging is also another thing. It’s in a slim, shiny, electric chrome blue container – very eye-catching. The wand also looks promising. It’s long, curved and has very little space between the tiny bristles. I expect that this kind of wand would make it easier to apply and also make the coats more even. I have high expectations for this product, that’s for sure. And so I tried it.

With one sweep, I didn’t see much coating so I applied two more coats. And then that did it. It clumped. So I tried to fix it. But then, it smeared all over my eyes. I had a very hard time wiping it off coz the formula is really thick and it dried quickly. But yes, it extended my lashes – to the point that it is already spidery. I don’t think it’s for me at all. I had such a bad experience with this product. The P350 was such a waste. But maybe it could work to other people. One thing is for sure though, that wand takes a lot of getting used to.

2. Victoria’s Secret, Hello Bombshell Make-up Kit Mascara

I got this product as part of the Victoria’s Secret Hello Bombshell make-up kit, which is worth above P2000. I got thrilled about the mascara because it is so tiny. I find it very cute. It is in a little shiny black container with a silver cap.

Opening it, I find a standard bristle brush for the wand. I think that would be a sign that it applies evenly. The scent is okay. It is tolerable. I didn’t mind it.

The formula is nice and silky but it can be really clumpy. That’s too bad. It doesn’t give volume; instead it can weigh down the lashes. The coats are not very noticeable. There’s not much difference before and after applying it. However, it is pretty good on the lengthening department. I would use it on my bottom lashes. I think it is pretty okay.

RATING:    3/5

3. Clinique, Lash Doubling Mascara

‘Ooh lash doubling!’ was my first thought about this product. I mean, that is quite a captivating name! I wonder if this product would really hold to its promise. What better way to know than to try for yourself, right? So I tried it.

First things first, I like the packaging. Isn’t it so elegant? It is in a nice metallic color, with a silver cap. First thought when I opened it? I don’t like the smell. It gives a very distinct smell, which I find disgusting. Well, that’s maybe just me but yeah.

The formula is very wet, which made it hard to apply. It smudges. It doesn’t clump though, even if you apply several layers. But then, it flakes by the end of a long day. The name is misleading, because it didn’t give me the lashes I expected from that name. It did made my lashes longer and fuller but not enough. It did not give as much volume as the name promises. You have to apply several layers to get a pretty good volume for your lashes.

The wand, however, is a standard long bristle brush, which I like. It separates the lashes into perfection, giving you fanned out lashes, which makes a very pretty natural look. It applies the mascara evenly and beautifully.

If little volume and little color is your thing, then this is for you. If you want to achieve the natural look, P1500 for this product would be worth it.

RATING:      3.75/5

4. Nichido, Dual Mascara

This product got me so intrigued. It is basically a 2-in-1 mascara! Who doesn’t want getting two things in one go? Not me. The product is dual ended with white base mascara, which has Pro Vitamin B5 on one end, and black lengthening mascara on the other. Exciting right?

The white base mascara serves as a primer for the lashes. It prepares the lashes for the lengthening mascara. Because of that base coat, the lengthening mascara holds well, giving you more dramatic longer lashes. Now, this product made me feel such a professional. Applying base coats before the lengthening one – made me feel that I know my stuff (LOL).

Opening it, I was a little doubtful of the consistency of the formula. It’s a bit sticky for my taste. However, after trying it, I realized that it is really easy to put on because the wand has really nice bristles. It’s a nice spiral brush, which helps in applying the mascara more effectively. Another thing is, it doesn’t smudge – at all – even when you perspire or cry while wearing it. But, having to wash it off is certainly not a problem. I also really like the smell of this product. It gives a pleasant scent, something you wouldn’t really get much from mascaras. It is so worth my P240! Actually, for my opinion, it should cost higher given what it offers.

RATING:   4/5

5. Maybelline, The Rocket Volume Express

I actually was so excited with this mascara. I just know it is up to something great just by the name. Plus, I really like how the packaging is so true to its name. It actually kind of looks like a rocket and I think that is cute. However, when I opened it, I slightly was hesitant by the wand and the formula. The wand, which they call the ‘revolutionary ultra-sonic brush’ is a fat, pointed brush with tiny teeth, it’s kind of a pet peeve of mine because it can be doubtful if you want good lashes. I don’t think these kinds of wands would do the work. The formula is really wet. I mean really, really wet. So I expected that it would be something that requires a lot of work putting on.

To confirm my expectations, I tried it. I loved it! I love how it elongates and gives volume to my lashes without having the product mess up my face. It is so easy to put on and also easy to wash off. And take note, I even apply it in three coats! I found the wand too big for my taste, but hey, it can definitely deliver! It’s clump-free and I didn’t have to worry about flaking. It stays on for the rest of the day. The scent is quite okay as well. This is totally worth the P300 I spent. I think I’ve found my match with this mascara! It’s perfect for everyday make-up. If we have comfort food, I would totally consider this as my comfort mascara.

On some days, I like to go girly 🙂

As a college student and an active school organization member, I am always on-the-go. In these days, I pull out my ever-trusted black skater skirt and pair it with any blouse that would look good with it. It is like my “go-to girly outfit”. It’s comfortable and chic.

This is why fashion staples are important to have in your closet. Fashion staples like the black skirt (black is a great color coz you can match it with anything) is really good for mixing and matching.

In this outfit, I paired the skirt with a cream top I made. Whenever I have time, I like buying my own cloth and making my own clothes. This is how I am different from others. I’ve got items in my closet that are originally made for my own preference 🙂

I love stocking my closet with comfortable shoes too, since I’m always on the go. Comfortable can come in cute pieces like this black flats.

To conclude the outfit, finish it with cute accessories. I like to go minimalist in some days. In this outfit, I finished it with a wrap-around watch and pearl earings.

I am a total music lover and my mom knows it, so when she spotted this shirt she just had to buy it for me :”>

And when I saw it, I fell in love! I love the prints and the color! When I saw it, I knew what I would do with it! =))

Black and White items are the bomb coz you can pair it with almost anything! I said ‘almost’ coz it still depends on various factors like the material, well you get my point.

This black and white ensemble is so me! I love to mix and match without compromising either my style or my comfort. And I tell you, this is only one of the many different styles you can do with this shirt. I’m so excited to mix and match using this shirt!

hat + statement shirt + skater skirt + sling bag + flats + minimal jewelry

For the make up: I like to go natural, so some mascara, powder, a little blush and red lipstick would do the trick.

Fashion Tip: There are various shades of “the red lipstick”. It’s important to know the shade that would go with your skin tone.

The waterfall braid

This photo was taken february 14, 2013. My blockmates and I were bored so one of my blockmates played with my hair. This was her first attempt to do the waterfall braid. Not bad for a first timer! 😀

Basically, what you do here is… get a tiny portion of hair from one side, braid it. And then clip it on the other side. Then, insert tiny portions of hair between the braids 😀 Easy! I can’t do it by myself though, so ask help from other people so you can achieve the look you want! Enjoy! 🙂

A bag from scratch

A bag from scratch

I got really bored one afternoon so I decided to make this bag. I’m so proud of it 😀 Honestly, I really dream of having my own fashion line, where my designs would be distributed globally…I believe this is one step toward that dream. hihi :”>

1. Handle from old canvas bags
2. Khaki skirt that I don’t use anymore
3. Scarf/Ribbon/ Belt.. (I actually change it depending on my outfit)

Put them all together, viola! 😀
Cute & efficient! A bag from scratch! 😀

Dressy Casual

Dressy Casual

Dressy casual outfits has no predetermined boundaries and can be constantly revised, however it is important to keep in mind that balance is important in every attire. Everything should be always well coordinated even if you have a vast range of options to choose from, as far as clothes and accessories are concerned. The definition for such an ensemble suggests that this look lies between the two extremes and must be handled delicately and cautiously.

For me, this wardrobe tells people that, ” Yeah, i could be casual and classy at the same time. 🙂 ”

Fashion Tip: Learn to mix and match! Mixing and matching is fun! 😀

Fashion Tip: Shop for pieces that you can wear a million times, something that you can mix and match. You’ll be shock to discover how many different outfits you can pull off with an item. 😀

Make up on the go!

Make up on the go!

Make up do wonders! Yes indeed! But only if you use it wisely. The face should be treated as a masterpiece. In applying make up, I consider the following points.

  1. It should go well with your outfit.
  2. It should highlight and enhance your features.
  3. It should not be literally visible.

I’m not really fond of bold colors when it comes to make up. I am more comfortable in using colors like black, brown, gold and colors that are close to my skin tone, I like playing with these colors.

The make up in this picture is simple. You can manage putting this on even if you’re in a hurry.

First, I applied moisturizer.

Second, because I’m not really fond of putting foundation on, I used face powder as my base.

Third, I applied the eye make up. It’s my favorite part! I love to experiment with colors! In this picture, I mixed gray eyeshadow with glittery black eyeshadow, applying it in strokes that would achieve a smokey effect. Under, I applied gold eyeshadow, tracing the eyes. To finish, I applied black mascara, to emphasize the lashes.

Fourth, blush-on…it’s important to choose the right shade.

Lastly, lips..I applied a pale shade because the eyes are already bold enough to make a statement. You wouldn’t want to scare people :)))

There it is, try it! Make up on the go! Enjoy! 😀

“ Fashion Fades, Style is eternal…”

1. Do not duplicate your basic colours. Choose between black or navy or brown (which is now the new black). Build your wardrobe as you would a house – foundation first, then add and embellish, mix and match, and enrich season after season, year after year, always keeping the same foundation.

2. You should have a selection of hot (warm), cool, basic and light colours in your wardrobe.

a) Hot colours – red, peach, pumpkin, purple, lilac, coral, yellow, pink, wine or burgundy

b) Cold colours – blue, teal, emerald, turquoise, apple green, aqua, midnight blue, mint, bottle green.

c) Basic colours – navy, black, grey, brown, stone, tan.

d) Light colours – white, ivory, cream

3. Most mistakes result from having too many bottoms and very few tops. You need to have at least five tops for every skirt or trousers you own. People will always notice your top half more than your bottom half.

4. The trick is to work with a few items of clothing in different colours, styles, silhouettes and fabrics that will co-ordinate with each other.

5. Be consistent and keep everything toned. These pieces are the skeleton of your wardrobe. Colours and prints will come later as you add tops, scarves and other pieces.

6. Tops and bottoms with different printed patterns will not mix and match well. It is best to buy your major print first (one you absolutely love), and then pick up the plain colours from the strongest colours in the print. 75% of your wardrobe should be plain colours, 25% could be prints.

7. The first step is to figure out your lifestyle needs, and plan your wardrobe around them. In the beginning it takes time and patience to work this puzzle out.

8. When you start to build your basic foundation wardrobe, try to use a total lifestyle concept, which will accommodate both formal and informal wear. You should not need to have a section in your wardrobe for “smart” and another section for “casual” clothes. Each piece in your wardrobe may come from a different lifestyle group, but when coordinated they should look great together.

9. Each item of clothing you buy must mix and match with at least three other pieces in your existing wardrobe – in that case if you have say 30 items in your closet and each of them goes with three other outfits, you will have ninety completely different combinations to wear. This is what creates a totally versatile wardrobe.

10. It is far more versatile to mix and match separates than dresses, so try to limit the number of dresses in your wardrobe. You can always wear a top and skirt together to look like a dress, but they can also be coordinated with other items. This will not only save you money, but will give you many more outfits to wear.

11. Shapes of clothes need to be classically simple, pure, clean. Details also – nothing too fashiony – keep them simple. All the shapes must work together, so that a jacket can be worn with not just one skirt or trousers, but with two or three, and perhaps with a dress as well. If you find one shape that suits you and that you love in any items (trousers, blouses, sweaters), and if it works as a good basic, stick to it. You could even buy several in that shape, of course in tones that suit you.

12. If you need to span seasonal changes, begin with your autumn / winter clothes. Winter fabrics are more expensive and therefore winter clothes are more expensive. It is best to begin looking for pieces that are seasonless – silk blouses, wool sweaters, cardigans (which be worn as summer jackets), raincoats with button out linings, jersey pieces which can be layered on in colder weather and worn alone in summer.

13. If you spend most of your time in a work environment, you will be surrounded by many of the same people every day. You will want to change your look each day for them as well as for yourself. For this kind of flexibility you will need a minimum of twelve pieces of clothes:

a) Two jackets

b) Three skirts or trousers

c) Four blouses or tops

d) Two sweaters

e) One dress

These twelve items will create four suits, three dress and jacket looks, and several skirt / trouser and sweater combinations.

14. You should be able to wear at least 70% of your clothes on a regular basis. The other 30% should be fashionable items, evening wear and so on.

a) 50% of your clothes should be basics i.e. part of your permanent wardrobe which you are continually building upon

b) 30% should be fashionable basics i.e. a blouse or cardigan in this year’s colour and which you should be able to keep wearing for years.

c) 20% should be high fashion items, which you will probably only wear for a few months or a year or so. These could be tops, scarves, or shoes, even bottoms. These will make you feel up to date and not frumpy. However they should be in the right styles and colours for you
